from here 2 Timbuktu ltd is a UK registered company which operates trans Saharan safaris and small group or tailor made trips in Mali, Senegal and Cameroon.
All overland journeys and small group trips are guided by the director of the company, Guy Lankester, in partnership with local operators and guides sourced from destination communities.
As the name suggests, from here 2 Timbuktu. trips are to far and distant places along the ‘road less travelled’. We follow the spirit of the old Chinese proverb: “the journey is the reward”. The name Timbuktu conjures the idea of a mythical place, somewhere beyond the known world and indeed many people do not realise that it is a real place. from here 2 Timbuktu journeys take you to the real place of Africa. We aim to dispel the many myths that surround Africa and encourage you to look at it from a different perspective, an African perspective, in the belief that this can help us look at our own world through fresh eyes.
In these complicated times in which we live, a trip to Africa can reconnect us with our essential humanity. I have always felt that tourism in Africa has tended to foreground the wildlife and the landscapes, while the most inspiring aspect of Africa - the people - pass by the window of the 4x4. from here 2 Timbuktu reverses the focus, aiming to connect you to the people while letting the stunning landscapes and the wonderful wildlife provide the backdrop.
The trips are inspired by independent journeys that I have made to the Sahara and across West Africa over the past five years. From Here 2 Timbuktu aims to give its clients the spirit of independent travel in an organised context, whilst giving something back to the remote communities which host us.
With my knowledge and contacts across west Africa and the Sahara I can organise and facilitate expeditions, film shoots and bespoke trips of any nature.
Clients are protected by a customer protection scheme called TOPPs which is operated by the Travel and General Insurance company - www.travel-general.co.uk. This is a per passenger insurance scheme taken out at the time of booking which protects any money paid to the company in the event of its financial failure.
