Gap Year Overland Adventures

and travel/teaching opportunities.

Trip A - 15 November to 15 December.

A trip across the Sahara from London to Timbuktu

via Morocco, Mauritania and into Mali.

When I was eighteen I spent six months travelling in Africa.  I learnt more in that period about life and about who I was than in any other six months of my life.

Africa takes you back to basics, back to the fundamentals of what it is to be a human being  - family, community, culture. A trip to Africa teaches you about humility, other cultures, other ways of being and living and there is no better time to be learning about this than at this exciting stage in your life.

This year my nephew, Jake, is taking a gap year and accompanying me across the desert on my annual Sahara Overland Trip - From UK to Timbuktu. He will then come down overland with me to Cameroon in February.

I am delighted to be able to give him a taste of the Africa that has taught me so much.

Because of Jake, for this year I am opening up the trip to other Gap Year students.

Either of these trips will introduce you to an extraordinary world, far but not too far to drive from our world, but planets away in terms of outlook.

Here’s the score in brief:

You will be joining a trip that is open to my normal clients so the trip will be a mix of Gap Year students and normal human beings!

  1. There are 3 places for Gap Year Students on each trip.

  2. You will be in a vehicle of your own with a driver.

  3. There will be a maximum of 5 other tourists in two other vehicles.

  4.   You will be expected to help me look after the other tourists and make their trip more comfortable by helping to carry bags, pack the vehicles, set camp, cook and wash up when necessary, and anything else I ask you to do.

My promise to you:

  1. A trip of a lifetime before your life has begun.

  2. Your safety and security will be my number one priority. I have excellent contacts in all the countries in which I operate, and my knowledge of on-the-ground travelling and how to deal with situations that arise is second to none.

  3. Through your experience with me I will teach you the fundamentals of successful travelling and in that hopefully you will be learning some good lessons to take forwards with you into the future.

  4. I will take you to places and communities inaccessible to normal backpacking travel.

Trip B - February 2011.

Mali to Cameroon Overland + teaching in the remote community of Esu,

The Kingdom at the End of The Road

An overland journey through the Sahel (edge of the Sahara) region of Africa. From Mali into Niger, to the important cultural centre of Zinder and Kano in Nigeria and over to Cameroon in the north near Lake Chad. We then descend through the length of Cameroon , from sahel to savannah to highlands and mountains and on to Equatorial forest and coastline.

The ultimate destination will be Esu in the highlands of the Bamenda region of Cameroon. This is the cradle of the Bantu African and some theorise that it is the cradle of modern humanity. Esu is a forgotten culture with its own language and strong identity.
