The Bou El Mogdad has been making her weekly 1000km journey from the Atlantic ocean at Saint Louis, the old capital of French West Africa, up the Senegal River to Podor on the fringes of the Sahara for half a century.

The course of the Senegal River marks the border between Mauritania and Senegal, Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa, Maures and Wolof.

This 10 day trip gives you a mix of modern vibrant Dakar, colonial architectural style and West African history in Saint Louis, and a 6 day cruise through diverse desert cultures and the wonderful wildlife of the Senegal River.

Le Bou el Mogdad is a lovingly restored 1950’s colonial cruiser, and an almost mythic boat for the Maure, Wolof and Tukolor inhabitants of this river border between Senegal and Mauritania.

The Route of the Bou El Mogdad

Saint Louis - former capital of French West Africa, an island in the mouth of the Senegal River

Parc D’Oiseau de Djoudj - the world’s third most important breeding site for migrating birds

Richard Toll - the sugar cane town

Dagana - the administrative centre of colonial French West Africa.

Salde - A Maure village

Podor  - with the Faidherbe fort.

Sometimes Africa, like a jewel, just catches its own bright light and sparkles.

Sometimes the style and luxury of its colonial past sits harmoniously with the colour and vibrancy of modern Africa.

And sometimes in Africa you don’t have to do tough travelling to see far and distant places.

I give you Le Bou El Mogdad.
