On Campfire, drive-it-yourself vehicles can do the journey in their own time with our network of guides and camps and operators on backing you up all the way.

A Taste of the Journey

From Fes or Marrakesh leave Arab Morocco and head for the Atlas mountains and Imilchil, a small town on the southern slopes of the middle Atlas, for our first encounter with the original Saharan people, the Berber.

From The Atlas descend to the Sahara. From here on to Bamako in Mali you will experience the landscapes and cultures with the people friends and networks From here 2 Timbuktu has built up over a decade of doing this journey: the Saharwiri of the Moroccan desert are our guides, the Berber fishermen of the Atlantic coast will cook you fish, the black and white Moors of Mauritania will take you through the desert. We pass through small villages, ancient towns and modern cities watching landscapes, colours, cultures and histories changing slowly until we are in black Africa for something entirely different again, yet by now strangely familiar.

What to expect on trips with From Here 2 Timbuktu

This route is our home, we feel as safe here as you do you in your home area because we are surrounded by communities we know and trust and can fall back on all the way. We have the local perspective and we share it with you. All we ask for in return is what all travellers, as guests on the road, always give out to get the best out of their journey: trust the guide.

You are on a road trip from A to B. There is  a tarmac road all the way unless we choose to leave for the desert!

There is no set itinerary though there is a plan that is adaptable, flexible and changeable at all times.

We go as a group, traveling as fast as the slowest person can go.

There will be a problem - a puncture, an issue with the car or on a border - but it will be surmountable. Our experience, guides and the community will see us through.

There will be long journeys and hot days, cool even freezing nights in the open desert under the most incredible stars you may ever see. You will expereince a range of emotions. But all is good, fine and normal, you are in the desert with a community backing you up.

A few days from grey, wet London and the begins to warm the heart.
The landscape is open, the light is bright.
The smells and colours and sounds exotic.
You are a world away before you’ve really got going...

Over the Atlas is the Sahara the greatest desert on earth - and Africa beyond!

Many worlds, two continents, one journey. You only live once!
